Why Does The Church Have So Many Bizarre People?

I’ve always wondered…why does the church have some of the strangest people? I’ve seen guys dressed up like Jesus walking around the balcony blessing little children at church. I’ve had one guy tell me that he had the ministry of keeping people humble. One lady who used to bring a frozen chicken and make dance moves with its arms in church during worship. I’ve seen it all. Sometimes it seems like the characters are straight out of an Adam Sandler movie. Then, of course, at the Dream Center we have dancing Lloyd, a man in his 70’s who will do a hip-hop dance whenever called upon.

THE REASON WHY THE CHURCH HAS SO MANY UNUSUAL PEOPLE IS BECAUSE WE ARE THE ONLY PLACE THAT WILL WELCOME THEM.

If you go to a nightclub, you won’t see those people being let in the doors. Restaurants will often kick out someone with bizarre behavior. Hotels? You’ve got to have the money to stay there so that often disqualifies them. The church has the greatest collection of colorful people because deep in these people’s hearts they know that Jesus is for everyone. The churches strength is not how many perfect people we have, or potentially tithe paying ones. It’s not about how cool our demographic is. The church is for the outcast as well. A church that tries to create an environment by eliminating this element is straight out the concept of “Selective Breeding.” Sure the church can get out of line sometimes, sure you might get hit up for money, and sure that same guy who needs love might talk your ear off at church every single week about something so random. But that’s ministry! Consider it a strength to your ministry if you have many colorful, interesting, personalities. I’ve heard people say, “Find the demographic you want to reach.” No! The world is our demographic. Everyone is our mission! We must welcome the people overlooked the most.

My word today is simple: embrace people who might act or look different. There’s no other place that will accept them but the church. I think that’s a great compliment. The church is not a waiting room for the saints but a hospital room for the sick. The world is not fighting to flood their establishments with this clientele. I sure hope we do!
